Dame Rosalyn Higgins was the first female judge appointed to the International Court of Justice in 1995, and served as its president from 2006 until her retirement in early 2009. Prior to joining the Court, Dame Rosalyn was a member of the UN Human Rights Committee and a distinguished author and scholar having lectured at universities across the globe. Dame Rosalyn has also worked as a barrister and Queens Counsel specialising in public international law and petroleum law appearing before a number of international tribunals including the European Court of Human Rights and the International Court of Justice where she acted as Britain’s counsel during the Lockerbie case. She is the recipient of numerous awards and honorary degrees and is currently the advisor on international law to the British government’s inquiry into the Iraq war.
