Global Internship Program

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply if I am a postgraduate Student?

All Global Internships except Oxfam Australia are open to students enrolled in a postgraduate coursework program (JD or LLM by coursework) (both full-time and part-time). You must have at least one unit left to complete in your degree after you would finish the internship and satisfy the eligibility requirements. (Note, the Plan Australia internship is different in that you do NOT need to have a unit left to complete in your degree after you would finish the internship - all other eligibility criteria applies to it).

Students enrolled in a full-time JD are eligible to apply for any of the Global Internships (including Oxfam Australia) so long as they have at least one unit left to complete in their degree after they would finish the internship and satisfy the eligibility requirements. (Note, Plan Australia applicants do not need to have a unit left in your degree after you would finish the internship).

Can I apply if I have previously received money from the Student Mobility Fund?

No, the Global Internship Program is only available to those who have not previously received financial support from the SMF.

What if I have applied to the SMF in the past but have been unsuccessful?

You are still eligible for the Global Internships. As long as you have not received SMF funding previously you are eligible for the Global Internship Program.

I have not taken Constitutional Law (or one of the other required units), nor will I have taken it by the start of the internship. Can I still apply?

No, you need to have taken ALL of the required subjects before starting the internship in order to be eligible. This requirement is not negotiable.

Do I need to supply written letters of reference with my application?

No.  You do not need to provide letters of reference with your application.  We ask that you simply provide the names and contact details of two referees on your CV.

Can I also Apply for Equity Funding?

Yes, in addition to SMF funding and the Castan Centre Global Internship Fund, you may apply for an equity scholarship if you fit into one of the six categories. Equity scholarships are not administered by the Castan Centre or the law faculty.  You must apply for them yourself.  Click here for details of the equity catagories, and here for information on how to apply. Students are advised to apply for Equity Grants by the Equity Grant application deadline. Applying for Equity Funding will not effect your chances of being selected for an internship as the two processes are entirely separate.

Can I apply if I have previously been a Castan Centre Global Intern?

No. In that case, you will have already received SMF funding.

Can I apply for a Global Internship if I have previously been an Aurora Intern?

It depends. If you received SMF funds for your Aurora internship, you will not be eligible for a Global Internship. If you did not receive SMF funds for your Aurora internship then you can apply for a Global Internship.

Is Reprieve part of the Global Internships Program?

No. The Reprieve program was set up in collaboration with the Castan Centre but it is run by Reprieve and applications go directly to them.

Can I apply for a Global Internship if I have previously been a Reprieve Intern?

You cannot apply for a Global Internship if you have received SMF funds. Thus, if you received SMF funds for your Reprieve internship, you will not be eligible for a Global Internship. If you did not receive SMF funds for your Reprieve internship then you can apply for a Global Internship.

Can I apply if I have previously been a Castan Centre In-House Intern?

Yes. The programs are entirely separate.

How many internships may I apply for?

You may apply for a maximum of three internships.

Do I have to attend the Information Session if I want to apply for an internship?

No.  The session is optional, but it is a good opportunity for you to learn more about the internships and to ask any questions you might have.

I am an international student.  Can I apply for a Global Internship?

You may apply for those internships which fall between the academic years. Because international students cannot defer studies, they may not apply for internships which fall during semester.

Do I get course credit for completing a Global Internship?

Not automatically, however you may choose to do the research subject (LAW4173 or LAW4174).  This is the equivalent of one unit and requires you to write a research paper on a topic linked to your internship.  You must locate your own supervisor for this.

Can I defer my internship?

No.  You must go at the time specified by your host institution, although allowances will be made for your academic schedule.
