Faculty managed internships

Students on beanbags

Monash University and the Faculty of Law have made a strategic commitment to the internationalisation of educational opportunities for our students. As such the Law School has developed a number of internships that will enhance both the personal and professional development of our students.

These are internships negotiated, advertised and managed by the Faculty of Law and developed via a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the organisation concerned. Students will be required to apply to the Faculty and meet a set of selection criteria which has been negotiated between the Faculty and the organisation involved. The application process may also involve an interview with the Director International, International Programs Officer and/or other appropriate members of staff.

Student Eligibility criteria

  • be enrolled in the Bachelor of Laws (or any Bachelor of Laws double degree) or Postgraduate coursework degree in the Faculty of Law at Monash University and have at least one unit of their law degree to complete at the end of the internship program;
  • at the time of the internship have completed at least one full time equivalent year of law (48 credit points) and have achieved a minimum distinction (70%) average across their law studies;
  • have the ability to complete the internship without compromising law studies or examination periods.
  • be available on return to commit to marketing and promotional activities, including future use of profiles and reports in marketing material.

Each Faculty managed internship listed in the following table may have further eligibility requirements.  Please see these under individual internship information by clicking on relevant link below.

International Student Restrictions

International students are not currently permitted to undertake internships during semester due to visa restrictions*. However they may be eligible for internships that fall outside of the semester dates and may therefore apply for funding if they meet the eligibility criteria outlined above.

(*This is a Commonwealth Government policy which is currently under review in consultation between Monash International and the Department of Immigration, Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs)

NOTE: Some internships may have additional application criteria set out by the host organisation involved. Please see individual internships for details.

Application Process

In order to apply for a Faculty Managed Internship you must complete the appropriate internship application form and submit it in hard copy with all appropriate documentation to the International Programs Officer located in Student Services office on level 1 of the law building, Clayton Campus.

NOTE: Different internship programs have different cut-off dates so please see the appropriate internship for eligibility criteria, funding and all relevant dates.

Student Mobility Fund

The Student Mobility Fund (SMF) provides financial support for Faculty managed internships that are located interstate or overseas. The SMF does not fund internships located in Victoria.

Note: If the Faculty managed internship exceeds three months in duration and there are sufficient projected funds for the current budgeting year, additional funds may be provided up to the value of $500. Interns must apply directly to the Director International via email with a request for additional support.
