Monash Oakleigh Legal Service
What we do
Monash-Oakleigh Legal Service (MOLS) is a community legal centre which provides free legal advice and assistance to members of the community. It is also a teaching clinic, where Monash Law Students can gain valuable practical experience. The Legal Service is overseen by a management committee representing members of the local community.
The Legal Service helps people who are unable to afford private legal assistance and representation or are unable to access the legal system because of language barriers or other disadvantages. The philosophy at MOLS is that everyone is entitled to free initial advice. MOLS is committed to clarifying the law and empowering clients with a better understanding of the legal system.
Student involvement
Monash-Oakleigh Legal Service is part of the Faculty of Law at Monash University. Clients’ matters are run by final year and graduate law students who work under the close supervision of qualified solicitors. Students are exposed to the operation of the law and the legal system and learn the importance of people, facts, evidence, and the impact that various factors, including access to legal representation, can have on an individual's ability to attain justice.
Funding
MOLS receives funding from the Monash Law School, Victoria Legal Aid, the Commonwealth Government and the City of Monash.
